Keeping track of comments

Before I proceed any further, I wish to acknowledge with thanks the part played by my friend and colleague Mahendra (Speedy) Gonsalkorale, who conceived the idea of posting the above lines as a new post under the heading - "Keeping track of comments".  The following few short paragraphs (in a different font) were actually drafted by Speedy almost in toto, to be posted as the Blog Administrator's own work, without divulging any other details. This is typical of the man whose main goal is to see that our batch blog lasts as long as possible. That is at least as long as one survivor in the batch remains in control of his or her faculties to read or write the last lines.

You will see two changes on the dashboard on your Right side.

There is a "Latest 5 comments" section and this is a "fill from above and the last one falls" type of column. As a new comment appears at the top, notification of the 5th one drops out. You will also see the name of the author and date posted and the first few words of the comment. If you click on it, you will be taken to the relevant post. Sadly, this method allows only 5 such comments at a time.

There is also a "Latest comments - first words" and this shows 10 posts, but it will reveal only the first words without the author or date. But nevertheless, if you click on it, you will be taken to that post but on a new tab on your browser.

I hope these changes make it easier for colleagues to identify a new comment as it appears. Please note that even if you go back to a post some months ago and post a new comment on it, that will be identified in the two panels. In this way, you are free to roam the blog and add comments which wouldn't be lost.

Thank you for your commitment to this blog. This is a wonderful change to see what's new on this Forum. As the 1st word of our comments is so important from now on, perhaps we should choose it wisely leaving the blasphemy to later!!

  2. Thank you Mahen for making things easy for those of us who are not as computer savvy as you! And ND, I will make sure that I use all my swear words at the end of my comments!!

Good to see you on the blog. You must enjoy the warm sunshine back home. As for the words, you are a paragon of virtue with not a word out of place. Enjoy the home comforts and the glorious food.

  3. I used the new system just now and was pleased to see how it helped me instantly to recognise past posts. Just to let people who use the 10 recent comments column that in a way this is handy as your click opens an new tab but keeps the old one open so that you can easily switch between reading the comment and reading the latest post already open. Any feedback will be welcome. As they say, "there is no such thing as a bad question- only bad answers".

  4. Important clarification which Lucky I am sure will amend in the post. When you use the 10 -line column of "Latest comments first words" Lucky has amended it to "Please note that such action has to be taken by opening a new tab on your browser". This is strictly not correct as YOU don't have to open another tab. When you click on a comment line a new tab is AUTOMATICALLY opened for you. You will also notice that when you hover your mouse on a comment on the 10 line table, it turns red and shows a bit more of the comment made. When the new tab is open, you can continue your browsing on that tab OR just go back to the original tab where you opened the Blog and close the tab where the comment post opened. You can also just switch between the two if you like. This is useful if you are looking at the latest post but wish to look at a previous one. If you do that on the main tab, of course what you see is the post you were looking at. But if you access the other post you want to see on the NEW tab was opened, you can switch between the two. This is useful for example if you are typing a comment but would like to look at a previous related post and you do that on the new tab and can come back to the main tab where the comment you are typing is still open and you can add, edit whatever as much as you like and when you are happy with the contents of your comment, you can post it (publish it). Lucky, please add this to the body of this post if you don't mind. Ta very much.

  5. Thanks! I'll finally get the hang of it. Thanks a lot for what you're doing to make this Blog last, as Lucky says. Our hope is that more and more batch mates will join in to send articles and comments. This Blog is one of the best things and even The Best Thing that has happened to our batch after we qualified! Cheers! from Zita, usually 'the late' or 'the last'!
