My love affair with Bloemfontein Hostel

By Appu Sumathipala

Kumar, I have done my best to document the names of the inmates, during my stay in good old Bloem. I have no idea how we got the name Bloemfontein. Was there some donor from South Africa, native to the Capital of Orange Free state (name Free State subsequently)?

It is with great regret that I have to tell you that I was not aware of either Bora or you during my stay at Bloem. I entered Bloem in my third year and had to undergo a minimal rag, which lasted less than a week. We had a mixture of students from the first year to the final year. As far as I remember, all were Medical students.

Our Warden was Prof Ranaya, and the Sub Warden was Dr Fernando who was Demonstrator in Physiology. After his departure,Dr.Kularatne, one of Ranaya’s Registrars, took his place.

I was the “BUTH MASTER” for two consecutive months and had the key to the telephone lock.I made sure that no one got away without paying for the calls.

I have a good memory of a vast number of the residents,upto now. They were,Marcus Fonseka, Jayasekera brothers,Makuloluwa brothers, P Kandiah,ChrstiKarunakaran,Edwin Kirubaratnam,S L Manawadu(known as SAL Manawadu),Nadanachandran(Neuro-Surgeon in Australia), Milroy Nanayakkara(Married Actress PunyaHeendeniya),P N Neelaranjitharaj,L W Ratnam,Sabanayagam,A E Singaratnam,Sivarajasingham,Milton Solonga,DenilWickramasuriya(President of the Hostel). They were from the 1960 batch.I might have missed a few.

The 1961 batch included D S C Arulanandan,A H de Silva(Ex-Thomian),Ganeshamoorthy,V Srikantha,N Satchithanandan,Yogaraj,Vivekananthan (better known as DOC VIVE), Sam Zoysa, RB Lena. Some names have evaporated from my memory.

The1962 batch was unique with multiple Professors and Consultants, all over the world. It included Con Bala,Bora,Cyril Ernest,Kumar,N S Jayawicrama, K Srikanthaand me(AHTS).

1963 Batch included P A de Silva, MHR Deen,P S Jayaratna,MNDP Jayathilake(secretary),Asoka Thenabadu,Thiagaraj(MNDP’s rowing partner) Eardley Weelathgamuwa. Some names have evaporated from my brain.

1964Batch.CJAmarasuriya,Arulanandan,Jayasiri Fernando and his roommate another Fernando,Sockkanathan and my roommate,Lafeer?.Few more namesonce again evaporated from my brain.

We also had Walter Jayasinghe from 1958 batch, famous N Rasalingam who served in NZ until his demise. I remember one Valikantha, who passed away,in his prime of life from cirrhosis.

The behaviour of our Srikantha and the big lad Sivarasingham were atrocious under the influence of ethanol, especially after their late nights.Dinner plates were often smashed, and the sub Warden was blind to their mischievous behaviour—both escaped expulsion. When sober,Sivarajasingham was a gentle giant.

These are just a few of my memories from my Bloem days.

Subject: COLOMBO MEDICAL CONGRESS 2020: PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
To: Colombomedicalcongress Info <info@colombomedicalcongress.org>

Dear Sir / Madam / Colleague

We warmly welcome you to the Colombo Medical Congress 2020. This is a historic event, and we thank you for agreeing to contribute towards its grandeur.  You will soon receive an official letter of invitation, the scheduled time for your presentations and other details on uploading your presentation etc.

We have a full programme: Pre-Congress workshops 10-12 Feb (Faculty and Hospital), Inauguration Ceremony on 12th Feb (Water's Edge), Academic Sessions: 13-15th Feb 2020 in the Faculty premises and Banquet on 15th of Feb.

Our goal is to make this a unique academic event that highlights advances in knowledge, your research findings or a rigorous review of a topic. A large gathering of students, staff, alumni and other professionals are expected to attend the academic sessions. There are well over 200 lectures and the Congress has received 250+ Abstracts!

The Academic Sessions are from the 13th to the 15th of Feb. There are 6 parallel sessions (Main Hall on the top floor of the Admin Building), Pathology Hall in the first floor of the Path Building, Auditorium in the ground floor of the Biochemistry Building, Physiology Lecture Theatre (top floor of Physiology Building), Anatomy semi-circular lecture theatre in the 'Block' and Surgery Auditorium in the hospital (near the Department of Surgery).

The program begins at 8 am sharp with a plenary (till 8.30 am) on each day. All of the remaining academic activities are in 6 parallel sessions except the Concluding Session at 3-4.30 pm on the 15th of Feb.  We have avoided using terms such as Guest Lectures, Symposia, Seminars etc.  ALL sessions and ALL lectures are invaluable to us and of equal importance. Meals will consist of healthy snacks and a break from the usual calorie-dense food at conferences.

The following is the basic format for the three days.
  • Plenary 8-8.30 am in the Biochemistry Building (Hall C) ground floor
  • Sessions running parallel (90 minutes total. Each speaker has 15-20 mins)
  • Lectures running parallel (20 minutes + 10 mins discussion)
  • Tea
  • Sessions running parallel (90 minutes total. Each speaker has 15-20 mins)
  • Lectures running parallel (20 minutes + 10 mins discussion)
  • Lunch
  • Sessions running parallel (90 minutes total. Each speaker has 15-20 mins)
  • Sessions running parallel (90 minutes total. Each speaker has 15-20 mins)
  • Tea
  • Academic events are scheduled to end by 5 pm the latest

This will be followed by social events (e.g. Batch Meetings), walks down memory lane to visit the old sites in and around the Faculty and Hospitals, Nature Trails and Heritage Walks.

We have encouraged students and staff to meet the alumni and form networks that would foster future research collaborations, exchanges and enable training opportunities. We request you to invite your colleagues, former students and other well-wishers to be at the Congress so that it would become an opportunity to network and strengthen links. You are encouraged to have a contact person from the academic staff of the Faculty to help you with arranging side meetings etc. The Congress Secretariat is a bit stretched at this stage to arrange such events.

Parking will be a problem at the venue. We have reserved space around the Faculty premises and there is basement parking in the new multi-storey-building behind the Anatomy Dept. Campbell Park will be reserved for parking and a free shuttle service will be available. Online registration is encouraged.

We look forward to welcoming you to an event that will go down in history.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Saroj Jayasinghe and Prasad Katulanda

A lasting recollection from my time in the Faculty

By Mahendra (Speedy) Gonsalkorale

There is probably no limit to the recollection of interesting episodes during our Faculty times. I regard the Blog as a proper medium to record some of these and hope many others will follow. In this post, I close my eyes and transport myself back to the mid-sixties to the Physiology Lecture theatre, a place I recall with a mixture of awe, veneration and wonderment. When I first walked into that theatre with its wooden panelling, tiered rows of seats arranged in a semi-circle with a long front desk behind which was a big blackboard, for me it was like walking into a place of worship. The currently hackneyed word “awesome” describes it well.

The occasion I am reliving was an evening Lecture by a new Neurosurgeon by the name of Darrel Weinman. The hall was packed and before the arrival of the Lecturer, there was the usual loud indecipherable cacophony of voices mingled with the noise of feet on the platform on which the chairs were arranged.I observed that last minute preparations were being made on the front desk by the Chairman, who I think was Prof Koch but my memory is not infallible.

Suddenly, the noise subsided quickly to be replaced by the pregnant silence of eager anticipation. Dr Darrel Weinman, looking young, smart and dapper, walked in with a big smile lighting up his handsome face. He was much shorter than I expected and was wearing an academic gown. He looked very distinguished and learned.

The Chairman introduced him with a brief but informative speech and invited Dr Weinman to address the audience. The exact topic is not of importance for this short essay. What he actually said is also not of great relevance. It is the manner of delivery, the visual aids used and his incredible ability to hold the audience spellbound with his eloquence and mastery of the topic that has stood in my memory. I had never before been to a Lecture so beautifully illustrated with a slick slide presentation. Not for him the “next slide please”. He signalled when he wanted the next slide with a press of the little “batta” he held in the palm of his hand,  invisible to us, which emitted a loud and sharp clicking noise when pressed. These were days long before computers and PowerPoint. The slides had to be made and mounted individually in the Photographic department. The Lecture had to be planned and made ready days before the presentation as no last minute editing was possible. All this required skill and mastery of the topic and Dr Weinman certainly possessed these qualities.

He spoke for about 40 minutes or so during which there was perfect silence only to be broken by prolonged and loud applause when he finished, which he modestly acknowledged with that warm and charming smile we all recall with endearment.

The physiology lecture theatre is also fondly remembered for other virtuoso presenters such as Dr Carlo Fonseka, Dr Wickrema Wijenaike, Prof “Bull” Seneviratne, just to mention a few. Who can forget our first days in the Faculty when we sat strictly according to alphabetical order ready with pen, and with note book perched on the little wooden pad on the right arm of the chair? Who can forget the loud noise we made by stamping on the wooden platforms on which the chairs were placed when there was occasion to cheer or applaud? The acoustics and the seating arrangement were perfect. After many decades of sitting in various auditoriums and lecture theatres in many countries, I regard the Old Physiology Lecture theatre as one of the best.

As we all know, Dr Darrel Weinman passed away recently.I was prompted to write this article when my thoughts turned to him when I heard of his demise. I regard myself as very fortunate to have benefitted from his knowledge, teaching ability and kindness; truly a great doctor and human being.
