Thank you for those beautiful drawings in vivid colours of those popular fruits. As they look so real, I am tempted to pick some out to have it for myself. The descriptions and health benefits are useful information for us all. Mangosteens and passion fruits caught my eye as they are rarely available in the UK. I do enjoy them on my travels.
Fruits come to us from all over the world. Pomegranates are mainly from Turkey, pineapples and avocados from the Caribbean. Rambuttans come all the way from Malaysia and Thailand. As they are air freighted there is a cost in terms of global warming!! But no one seems to care too much about all that as they keep us healthy and happy.
Thank you again for returning to the blog with your beautiful paintings to liven up our lives.

  5. Thank you Chira for your beautiful painting of fruit. They look realistic enough to make my mouth water !

We are indeed blessed to have such a variety of fruit here in Sri Lanka.Thank you also for the snippets on their beneficial effects , though as you rightly point out they have not all been scientifically proven.
I remember how my grandmother would not allow us to eat pineapple or mango when we had our periods. I remember her saying " lamayo, amba mulak udin paninna wath epa " saying it causes menorrhagia. Many years later when I was a Consultant Anaesthetist I asked a Prof of Gynecology if there was any truth in that belief. He said that both fruit contain haemolytic agents and could possibly cause menorrhagia! So some beliefs handed down generations do have a rational basis !
You still have quite a lot of colorful fruit to paint...so look forward to the next lot your next creation !

    2. Suri, I found your information about the connection with menorrhagia interesting. There is often some truth truth to these
"old wives tales." What about these vegetables and fruits that are "heaty" or "cooling."

  9. Chira, I enjoyed looking at these beautiful paintings of the fruits and appreciated the accompanying notes. I confess I am a picky fruit eater and have only a few favorites. I cannot explain why I am that way! (Too much trouble to peel and cut? Too messy? Too mushy?) I often drink the juices which is not the best way, because one misses out on the benefit of the fiber. At any rate the fruits you have painted look good enough to eat!!

  10. Chira, thank you very much for the lovely paintings and useful information. Guava is supposed to have the highest content of protein. The carbohydrates in bananas are rapidly absorbed and that is probably why tennis players are seen consuming bananas in between points.
I love durian, which is banned in air planes as hand baggage as well as in hotel rooms, probably because of it's unusual smell. Cattle are not tied to durian trees as the falling fruits may cause serious injuries. There is a huge durian tree at the entrance to the Orchid House at the Peradeniya Gardens. At present there are plenty of rambutans, durians and mangosteens .by the road side in Sri Lanka.
Some people encourage the seeds to be thrown out of the vehicles, while travelling, for propagation purposes.

I must admit that I just don't paint without looking at anything but by looking at a picture on the Internet. So it is not so great. Anyway I value your appreciation.

  13. Dear Chira, I too echo the above comments by Manil. Your artistic skills for detailed drawing is amazing! the annotations on the health benefits is an added attraction. My favourite is the Rumbutan. I must confess Sanath that I am not a Durian fan! but tolerated the smell in the house as my late husband adored the fruit. if he ever saw a durian stall on the roadside he will be sure to stop and stock fruits in the boot and we had to bear the strong aroma all the way back home. Well I got used to it and never complained. Manel
