Self portrai in acrylics

Self portrait in acrylics

Self portrait using Acrylics. I showed this to Nihal (ND) and he asked me to post it on the Blog. I hesitated but finally agreed. Hope it has some resemblance to me!

  1. Hey, I am the first to comment on this absolutely fabulous self portrait by our Speedy! Hey (I almost said, Machan') is there no end to your talents? Honestly I am proud of you and I am sure I am not alone. This portrait has so much substance to it! It's much more 'alive' than the 'ordinary paintings' we see and it is much more 'solid' for want of a better word. If you can do this then you can start your next 'sub career' at a time when most of us have disappeared from action of any sort. Well done! And I am glad you agreed to put this on the blog on Nihal's advice. I am still looking at it and I can say the eyes look so real! I can go on but I expect there'll be tons of comments to follow! 1. Zita,
Brilliant comment.By the way, mind your spelling of words.Machan without a "g" at the end has entirely different meaning to machang,in Tamil is brother-in-law.

  2. You are very generous Zita. I can't tell you how satisfying it is to immerse yourself in a painting. I know you pain too, apart from your wonderful poetic talents. This was a real challenge. Eyes and mouth are so difficult to capture. I am not fully satisfied with it but you have to stop trying to improve it at some point. Thanks again for taking the trouble for commenting and it is definitely time for another post from Zita!

  3. Ah! What a great likeness of the artist. When I first saw it I knew it was a Gonsalkorala. This is a brilliant self-portrait done by a very talented artist and I am so pleased it now adorns our precious gallery in our blog. To a person who cannot draw a leaf let alone a tree this is a masterpiece and a true likeness of greatness.

  8. Very good Mahendra. You are really a man with many talents. Did you use a mirror or a photograph as your source ?

    1. Thanks Indra. Yes, I looked at many photos but used one particular one as the main subject. I had to flip it horizontally to make the R and the L as would be seen by an observer

    2. Mahendra, how about getting others to send in pictures they have drawn for publication? We don't mind how good or bad they are. It's got to be something drawn by them, not just self portraits either. And I know you got many more in your own 'repertoire'. I remember 'a girl seated on a park bench' and many others. It'll be great to see those!

    3. Zita, that is a great idea but how do we motivate them to send their work to us? This is the problem. If you are able to persuade any friends you know, do have a go.

    4. Let's say, whoever reads this and wants to share their drawings/paintings please send them to Mahendra for consideration and publication on our Blog. Painting was never my forte. But I hope to look through my humble attempts. Let's take this as a challenge! Zita

Mahen thank you for the acrylic self portrait of yourself. I did not know you were a talented artist too... among all your other talents. What a great achievement and much to be admired.

Thanks to Lucky for starting the blog and to all your loyal colleagues for their interesting and invaluable contributions which benefit us all.

  10. Mahen, This is very good!! More than the likeness, which is difficult enough to capture, I think you have captured an interesting expression. I'm not sure what it is! I have seen some of your earlier works, but I think this is excellent.
Painting and drawing is a very meditative experience isn't it?
