Early this morning, I was informed by an Old Anandian classmate that Suren had passed away. I was shell shocked but managed to inform the members of the batch right away. According to the yet sketchy news trickling in, Suren had been in an "unconscious" state on his bathroom floor. Swini had tried CPR but failed to revive him.
Suren and I were classmates at Ananda College for many years. At the UE exam of December 1960, only five of us succeeded to continue medical studies although before and after that particular exam, Ananda results had been quite good. WDH Perera was the only one to get in direct, but had to go to Peradeniya. The other four, qualified to do the 6 months course, but only Suren and I ended up in the Colombo Medical Faculty. However, quite a few others joined our batch in June 1962.
Suren's 93 year old mother passed away last year and he visited Sri Lanka quite a few times since then. The following pictures were taken on his last visit.
Thanks Lucky. Really sad and shocking news and when I got your email, I rang Swini and as one would expect, she was in a state of shock and I just conveyed my deepest commiserations and didn't ask questions. Her close friend who spoke to me said that funeral arrangements have not been made yet
ReplyDeleteI was so glad that I met him and Swini wben we had our mini-reunion in London on the 30th of June. He was on top form and we had a lovely time. I also recall him at the Last Batch Reunion in March this year.
I shall always recall him from Medical Faculty days as immaculately dressed in white with a great sense of humour.
He was a good man and may he rest in Peace.

Dear friends and batch mates of 1962, When Mahendra gave me the news of Suren's unexpected passing, I was shocked and tremendously saddened.
ReplyDeleteThe last I met up with Suren was at the mini reuinion on 30th June 2017 . I was seated next to him and we had a nice long chat in which he advised me to read two books related to the discussion that day at our table. Those books were Many Lives and Many Masters by Dr Brian Weiss and the second- Only Love is real by the same author. I bought them and read them and found them excellent. So I emailed him but received no reply and I emailed again a couple of days ago.
This just shows that we must show one another we care for them as an when possible and not leave it for another day. The chance may be gone for ever. Suren, I remember you so well even during our batch days. You and I were good friends. I always thought very well of you and you never showed any airs or graces and you were a good friend to all.
May you rest in peace.
Mrs Iyer and other family members, we've all lost a fantastic human being! Let us be glad of the time we had him on this earth. From his good friend, Zita
Lucky, Thankyou for informing us of the sad departure of yet another batch mate from amongst us. I would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends.
