  4. Dear Chira
Thank you for those beautiful paintings and I appreciate your skill and the wonderful talent to bring them to ‘life’. Those mouth-watering delights may seem common to those in my homeland but for me, a reluctant émigré, they resurface delectable memories of a happy childhood in my tropical paradise.
Durian is a reminder of a tall ancient tree that was said to be haunted with lights appearing at night due to a visitation by an ‘avatar’. I hasten to add, although I was eager to see it, I never saw any of those lights !!
Beli and wood-apple were my special favourites which were in an ancestral home in Galle. Those thoughts bring back happy memories of my many uncles and aunts who showered me with affection and are now long gone to the world beyond.
The ubiquitous banana, mango, guava and jambu fruits were abundantly available in those days. Many were distributed free by friends and neighbours who couldn’t cope with their seasonal abundance. They were sold in markets too at a reasonable price.
Thank you for rekindling those memories of long ago while appreciating your lovely drawings.

Thank you very much for your encouraging comment. I value your appreciation greatly.
Sri Lanka has so many delicious fruits.
I wonder whether you have tasted the Alphonso mango that is available in Sri Lanka now. This is the most tastiest mango I have ever tasted. The Mango I have painted is also Alphonso Mango.

I have tasted Alphonso Mangos both in the UK and in Hong Kong. I think that variety is indigenous to India but I'm pretty certain it is now grown in South East Asia and may even flourish in Sri Lanka. The two popular varieties of mango that have become table favourites are Alphonso and the Pakistani Honey Mangos. They flood the UK market in the summer and have a ready sale. Some of the Sri Lankan mangos will I am sure compete favourably with the best in the world. Perhaps we gorge them to 'extinction' during the season and are never enough to export them. That is indeed a thought to grow our best mangos in sufficient quantities for export.

There are Alphonso plantations in Sri Lanka.
This mango is so delecious but costly. Each fruit costs Rs. 600 to 900

I paint looking at a photo on the laptop, so it is not so great. I enjoy doing it and get a lot of pleasure when it looks like the original.

    Hi Chira
Once again you have delighted us by your beautiful, realistic paintings of fruit. They are an ample testimony to your artistic skills, attention to detail, and your immense patience !!

Thank you also for listing their beneficial effects.

However, I am rather surprised that some well accepted and known benefits have been left out . I would like to add

*The aphrodesiac effect of Durian... Isn't that the reason for their popularity inspite of the off putting odour ?

    *The laxative effect of Bananas

*The use of Beli to treat both constipation and diarrhea?
    I remember the saying
" Badayana wita Beli kanawa, Beli kana wita, badayanawa !

    Keep up the good work

Thank you very much for appreciating my paintings. I value it greatly.
I looked at the Internet and got the health benefits. In fact I was reluctant to publish them as some of them are not scientifically proven. Mahendra and I discussed and decided to make the following statement at the begining of the 1st part of paintings of fruits 'Some of the claimed health benefits described may not be strictly scientifically verified and are debatable............................'
    1. The aphrodisiac effect of Durian was not mentioned in the Internet.
    2. The laxative effect of Banana was not mentioned in the Internet.
    3. How can I say that Beli can treat both diarrhoea and constipation when the Internet does not give it.
When I make a statement I should have the backing of atleast the internet
Actually it was very difficult to collect all these health benefits not knowing whether they are proven.
I did it with the best of my ability.

I love the cut papaw and the beautiful bunch of pink jumbu the best. Your efforts to gather the health benefits of these fruits is much appreciated and makes the presentation more interesting. Thank you Chira and keep up the good work.

I gain a lot of pleasure when others say that these fruits are life like and mouth watering. I feel that I have fulfilled my task of painting them.

  11. Suri,
I noted your comment on some health benefits of durian and bananas not been mentioned by Chira. My view is that a lot of so called "health benefits" are what is accepted by people mostly indigeneous to where the fruit grows and notnecessarily with good scientific studies to back the claims.
That is why Chira and I agreed to state in Part 1, " Some of the claimed Health Benefits as described may not be strictly scientifically verified and are debatable. Some claims are highly generalised and open to question. Readers can make up their own minds, and I shall be keen for your feedback".

Thank you very much for your comment.
I agree with you that though we have heard a lot about the health benefits of our local fruits, we don't know whether they have been backed with scientific studies.
When I make a statement about health benefits I feel that I should have the backing of atleast the internet.

    1. There are many things in life we decide to accept on what evidence satisfied us This may not always be rigorous scientific proof. If an individual is happy that hevirvshe is making the right decision for him/her, that's what matters. I take all sorts of herbs and spices although I have no controlled clinical trials to back me up!

  13. Dear Chira, thank you for giving us the opportunity to enjoy your beautiful creations. Thank you also for sharing the health benefits of these fruits. Some of these beliefs have been handed down from generation to generation. I would think that it would be very difficult to prove or disprove some of these beliefs. There is also quite a bit of variation in personal tolerance /allergies related to food. We often hear people say "Oh, I cannot eat------- and ---------, I break out in hives!" The main thing is that you enjoy painting these images, so Chira, you should just keep on doing it and challenging yourself.

Thank you very much for appreciating my paintings. I value it greatly.
As you say it is challenging. I was not happy with the Durian I painted. I got another Durian Photo and painted it and took the 2nd one. When Mahendra came home I showed both and asked him which is better, he said both are nice.
I enjoy painting and gets a lot of pleasure when others appreciate them.

  15. Chira, excellent paintings! I liked Jumbu the best. When mothers complain that their infants are constipated, i prescribe Papaya rather than a laxative, which works very well.

Thank you very much for appreciating my paintings. I am happy when others enjoy my paintings.
I have never gone for any classes but look at a photo on the Internet and paint. It gives me a lot of pleasure when it looks like the original.
I was not happy with the Durian I painted. It was extremely difficult to paint the spikes on the skin to look natural. So I got another photo showing less skin, painted and took the second one. When Mahendra came home, I showed both and asked him which is better, he said both are nice.
I think all fruits help the digestive system, and I agree with you that Papaw is the best for constipation. I look at the Internet for the Health Benefits and collect information as I need some sort of backing since some of these are not scientifically proven.
I mentioned that Jumbu and Guava help constipation and most of other fruits aid the digestive system.

  17. Chira, as most fruits contain a lot of fiber, these are excellent for chronic constipation. There is some supportive evidence for the prevention of inflammatory bowel disease such as Ulcerative Colitis and Chrons Disease.
There is a trend to omit the apostrophe "s" after a named syndrome, because the person who described the syndrome does not own it nor suffered from it!
