More paintings by Chirasri Jayaweera Bandara
I am delighted to post more paintings by
our Chira. She says this will be her last post, but I hope I can change her mind
as her many contributions have been so refreshing and have helped to enrich the
blog.
Chira never had any formal lessons on painting
and just started painting by looking at pictures on the internet. She started painting with
watercolours first and went on to acrylic later and has never used oil paints, nor has she done
any black and white painting.
Chita is a great exponent of cross-stitching, and after she did six, her daughter Anjali encouraged her to take up painting as
another hobby, and she provided her various items required to start painting about three years ago.
The first painting she did was a rosebud, and it came out well and was praised by several people. This prompted her to do
more and more paintings. This skill, although not taken up till then, was clearly
always in her as she discovered a certificate given to her for a painting she
did when just 8 years old, by The Royal Drawing Society U.K. stating “very
good”.
Her detailed and colourful paintings are
a treat to behold. As an eye surgeon, her
dexterity has been admired by many. Professionally, as we
all know, she is one of four eye
surgeons in our batch, the others being Cassim, Zita and JGW.
I like to thank Chira for her many
contributions to the blog. I hope she continues to paint as she is so good at it
and hope she sends some more.
Mahendra “Speedy” Gonsalkorale.

ReplyDeleteThanks for those beautiful paintings. Autumn will soon be knocking on our doors. The warm colours of your drawing with the tree lined path brings home to us the reality of the seasons. The blue jays were commonly seen by the lagoon in Katunayake when I lived there with my parents. But that was 65 years ago before there was an international airport round the corner. I still remember how thrilled I was to see their lovely colours. You have captured its coloured feathers beautifully.
The canopy of the lush green forest and the leaves are painted with such great care they look so real and natural. I would have indeed preferred to see the forest without the waterfall. Thank you for bringing nature into my lounge. It is heart-breaking to think we are slowly losing the forests and all the creatures that live there.
It is so refreshing to appreciate your paintings when life around us seems to have gone insane.

DeleteThank you very much for appreciating my paintings. I value it a lot coming from a great portrait painter. I am glad I painted the Blue Jay bird as you have seen them here in Sri Lanka. I have never seen them though I enjoyed painting a Blue Jay.
I am happy you liked the forest trees paintings as I found it a little difficult to paint them. As there was a suggestion for me to try painting landscapes, I took up the chalenge and painted 2.

ReplyDeleteWhat you have drawn is the North American Blue Jay. The Asian variety what I have seen has a tinge of brown in the neck. They are both very beautiful.

DeleteBirds are beautiful and colourful that made me paint 30 birds. You are lucky to have seen our local beautiful Blue Jay. The other day I was thrilled to see a Beautiful red Wood pecker perched on our balcony wall, just about a yard from where I was seeted. I tried to take a photo but unfortunately he flew away.

Dear Chira. Greetings from London. I don't know much about birds but your paintings have given me a new interest in these 2 legged beauties. Their colours are so vivid and they come alive in your paintings. I go to Yala often but usually concentrate on the 4 legged species. Henceforth i will look out for the 2 legged beauties as well. Thanks Chira for rekindling an interest in birds

ReplyDeleteThank you very much for appreciating my paintings. I value it a lot. I am glad you liked the autumn landscape, it reminds me of the autumn scenery when I was in UK.
Chira
Chira, let me explain why I chose your autumn painting especially. Here are the reasons. 1) The perspective is excellent with the size and spacing of the trees and their shadows. It is obvious to the viewer that there is a long tree line path disappearing into the horizon. 2) The foreground becomes a bit darker, or put it in another way, the distant background is slightly lighter and this gives depth to your scene. 3) The brilliant truly autumnal colours of the leaves are great and one “experiences” the beauty of autumn. Well done Chira!

Mahendra has published 140 of my paintings. What more can I paint. I enjoyed painting them. It is so relaxing. I am happy when others appreciate them.

Chira, the paintings are beautiful. My favourite is the Blue Jay (Indian Roller). Its distinct blue is best seen in flight when the bird spreads it gorgeously banded wings. Although a common bird in Sri Lanka, regrettably we in the hill country do not often see this beautiful bird as its preferred habitat is in the low-lying areas. I am glad that you have taken to landscape paintings. You have aptly captured the glorius hues of Autuam which is a treat to us in the tropical climates.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to more of your paintings.
