ReplyDeleteThe delay is posting this was due to a temporary ban on Youtube and social media in Sri Lanka (to prevent the spread of wild rumours) I had a feeling that the ban would soon be lifted.
Mahen, I listened to the original of this song by Pasquel which I hadn’t heard before.

ReplyDeleteI didn’t like the original version by KP hence I took my time to listen to yours. I like your version very much and feel you have given the song a far better arrangement. I love the imagery. Well done.
Somehow the new songs don’t have the same appeal as the ones I grew up with. It just reflects the ‘damage’ done by my years in exile.
Thanks, Rohini and Nihal. I noticed a lull in the proceedings and sent this contribution to keep things going. I do like the KP version but tastes differ of course. Glad you both liked my modified version which has a slower tempo. Looking forward to some contributions from others soon.
ReplyDeleteND (Nihal) says that the new songs don't have the same appeal as the ones he grew up with in SL. My own explanation is simple. I think it's just that he had not listened to good Sinhala songs since leaving for the UK. If I am not mistaken, both ND and Speedy cut the umbilical cord about the same time. Speedy has somehow managed to stay in touch and knows all about new generation singers like TM Jayaratne and Kirthi Pasqual while being a fan of old Sinhala movie songs as well as Sunil Shantha, CT Fernando et al. How do the two of you explain this?
ReplyDeleteDuring my 13 year stay in the US, I used to visit SL every year. On such visits, I always went to Torana in Bambalapitiya and get the most popular songs recorded on Cassettes (and later CDs) and play them during weekends and enjoy (with that inevitable glass by my side - what ND calls Amber Nectar).
Lucky. I suppose tastes differ. I have generally kept in touch with Sinhala songs although there are a lot of songs and new singers I don't recognise. I love Dell Studio productions and the general standard of presentation and musical quality has improved enormously. The video by Wayo on "Api sanseile" for example, is superb. My musical tastes are wide, from Beethoven to Baig!
ReplyDeleteI don't invest in CDs or DVDs any more. Instead, I watch whatever I want on Youtube. The 56" TV on full screen is superb. I had to buy a Wi-fi range extender as the TV is not anywhere near the Router and computer. I think I have seen all the Dell Studio stuff. I also recommend Tone Poem and Le saha Laya.
