Creative Spot - A Beautiful Song by Speedy

                                                                     Mahendra (Speedy) Gonsalkorala

                                                                      T.M. Jayaratne

Speedy's own rendition of that beautiful song by T.M. Jayaratne "Kalpanawo Pawa Yai".

Mahendra (Speedy) Gonsalkorala is undoubtedly the most versatile member of our batch. Apart from being one of the brightest in the batch who has reached the top in his chosen speciality, he excels as a singer (both western and oriental), plays a number of musical instruments and is a good dancer. He is a writer, a poet, a photographer and an artist as well.

Speedy is a great fan of well-known Sri Lankan singer T.M.Jayaratne. So am I. When I moved to Kandawatte Road, Battaramulla in 2009, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that TM is also a resident on Kandawatte Road. Since then, I have got to know this famous singer personally.

Just for the information of viewers, T.M. Jayaratne is a very accomplished singer and has received the Presidential Award in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1987. In 2006 Jayaratne was awarded the best male singer award at the Raigam Tele Awards Festival. Among Speedy's favourites are Sithin Ma Nosale, Kalpanawo, Sonduru Atheethaya, Amma Sandaki. According to Speedy, TM was born the same year as himself.

Speedy apologises for the lack of clarity of the musical backing which he says is not what he would like it to be. Click on the following link and enjoy.

  2. Most encouraging ND. TMJ is superb, you can listen to his songs on Youtube, Miyurugee etc. He also does some sessions on Derana studios (Youtube again) and these sessions are a kind of fusion because there is a distinct Western touch with a mix of Eastern and Western musical instruments. Some purists don't quite approve but as for me , I strongly believe in cross cultural enrichment, as I am sure you do. Talking of Youtube, what a great concept! Look forward to more literary gems from you. -Speedy
