Poetry Corner

The Poetry Corner is Suri's great idea! Thanks Suri. Contributors can send me either their own creations worthy of sharing or from your collections. For starters, here are three poems, one by Suri , one by that lovely human being and batchmate we miss so much, Zita, and one of mine.

(1) Beatitudes by an anonymous author

Blessed are they who understand
My faltering steps and palsied hand,
Blessed are they who know my ears today
Must strain to catch the things they say.
Blessed are they who seem to know
My eyes are dim and my wits are slow.
Blessed are they who looked away
When coffee spilt at Breakfast today.
Blessed are they with a cheery smile
Who stop to chat for a little while.
Blessed are they who never say
You told that story twice today!
Blessed are they who know the way
To bring back memories of yesterday.
Blessed are they who make it known
That I am loved, respected and not alone.
Blessed are they who know I am at a loss
To find the strength to carry my cross.
Blessed are they who ease the days
Of my journey home in loving ways.
"How beautiful a day can become when kindness touches it"

(2) The fool and the wise man- author: Mahendra Gonsalkorale

Face red with anger
skin glistening with moisture
fist thumping, pulse racing
voice sounding like thunder
the fool makes his point

Speaking in measured tones
calmly making his views known
just the facts to support his view
no challenge to accept thrown
the wise man makes his point

(3) “What was it all about”- by Zita Perera Subasinghe

The New Year sows a brand-new seed

But it’s down to thought and deed
Of every man, woman and child born
A glimmer of hope, a peaceful dawn

Let us not be sullen or sad

The sun is shining, let’s be glad
As we greet the New Year’s morn
A new vision! New Hope! New Dawn!

  1. Hi Speedy, gosh you are truly amazing. I never expected you to act so promptly on my humble suggestion. Thank you so much for taking up my suggestion.

I do love your poem about the impact of calmness and serenity on presenting one's opinion, instead of riding rough shod over another's view and feelings. Unfortunately I'm today's world people do tend to accept shouting even though they instinctively know what is being expressed is inaccurate and often even untrue.
Zita's poem is also brilliant.Always challenging and inspiring us to be hopeful and look for the good

  2. Suri and Mahen,
This is a lovely idea. Perhaps we can 'recycle' some of the poems we have shared before, to enjoy them once again?
