Professor Sanath Lamabadusuriya MBE, honoured
The Colombo Medical Congress was held last week in conjunction with CoMSA (Colombo Medical Students Alumni Association). During the sessions, Sanath was invited to appear for a sculpture which was done by Sagara Madusanka who is a disciple of Professor Chandraguptha Thenuwara of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Colombo. The sculpture took three and a half hours. It was made out of clay; later, it would be dried and converted to terracotta. plaster of Paris cast would be made thereafter, and finally, a model out of metal. It would eventually be displayed in the museum of the Faculty Tower Building.
This event was facilitated by Professor Vajira Dissanaike, Professor Saroj Jayasinghe, Professor Priyadharshani Galappathi and Dr. Santhushya Fernando of the Colombo Medical Faculty.
Sanath thanked everyone involved in this project
for deciding to honour him in an appropriate manner in recognition of his
long-standing service to the Faculty (He served the Colombo Medical Faculty
from 1st April 1969 to 30th September 2008. From September 1980 to September
1991, he was in Ruhuna).
I am so pleased that the Colombo Medical Congress has recognised Sanath’s long years of service in the medical profession and his immense contribution to medical education to date since 1969.
ReplyDeletePersonally, It has been my great privilege and pleasure to speak of Sanath as a close friend and a batchmate. I recall our days in the faculty with much nostalgia when he was ever present to join in the fun from the Law Medical match to the Final Year Trip and everything else in between. Sanath was a superb billiards player and if my memory serves me right he won the prestigious tournament, once, despite fierce opposition.
I remember those faculty years for his remarkable memory and his ability to recall rapidly and accurately. He was articulate and confident and outshone everyone else in our faculty examinations.
His altruism and support for good causes is legendary.
Beyond the books and academics, Sanath has been good friend to many with his helpful kindness. It has been a great pleasure to see him at our Reunions in London. I wish him well for the future.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on this well deserved accolade. You have brought great honour apart from yourself to the Colombo Medical School and to our 1962 group. Your services to medical education in SL are inestimable. That will be your greatest legacy.
Kanthi and I wish you many more years of good health and capacity to serve our beloved motherland.
Once at an American College of Cardiology meeting an artist drew cartoons of both us , myself with a raised golf club and Kanthi in gym kit; a treasured memento. It’s wonderful that the sculpture will be permanently housed in the medical school.

When I read the description of the artistic process involved, I thought, Good grief, did he have to sit still for 3 hours?

Thank you very much Kumar, Srianee and Rohini for your very generous and sincere sentiments; Srianee, yes, I sat somewhat still for three and a half hours, even without visiting the wash room! However there was a lot of activity around me because many alumni and students were posing next to me and taking videos and photographs! Later I heard that this activity continued long after I left. Some of it had gone viral on the internet, as some of my patient's parents have seen it on the internet!
ReplyDeleteSanath, you have contributed tremendously to the cause of medical education in this country . I think it is better that they recognize your effort now than in posterity. I am glad it happened and I am so proud of what you have achieved that I have sent it to several of my physician friends who are not from our batch.They got a very good likeness of you.
