PALMISTRY-- A Personal Experience. Sanath P. Lamabadusuriya

PALMISTRY-- A Personal Experience. Sanath P. Lamabadusuriya

In late 1971, when I was waiting to travel abroad for Post-Graduate studies, I decided to have my palm read by one Kingsley Goonetilleke, who was a well-known palm reader at that time. He had his office at Galle Road, Ratmalana. I had long hair at that time (JVP times!) and having parked my Triumph Herald car some distance away, I walked in with an unbuttoned shirt wearing a pair of slippers.  After accepting a fee of ten rupees, he daubed my right palm with Indian ink and got a print onto a sheet of paper. He asked me what my profession was and I replied that I am a bank clerk. He retorted that I cannot be a bank clerk and unless I assisted him he was unable to give an accurate reading. Then I told him that I am a doctor. He said that although I am a doctor I have to be involved in more activities rather than treating patients. When I requested clarification, he told me that I should be involved in teaching and/or research as well. I was a lecturer in the Colombo Medical Faculty at that time and involved in a lot of teaching and some research but I remained silent. He mentioned a few events of my past which were factually correct but wrong by a year or two.

He told me that I was due to travel abroad very soon for further training and will return after a few years as a single person (not married). He went on to mention that I will eventually get married to a person known to the family. At that time I had no idea who my future wife was going to be. (My father was very happy with this particular prediction because he did not wish for me to get married to a foreigner !).He also predicted that I will become a professor before my 40th birthday. At that time it was not possible because Ceylon had only two medical schools in Colombo and Peradeniya and both its professors were due to retire in the early 1990 s (by that time I would be close to 50 years!).

I travelled to London in late December 1971 and returned home single after three years.

In February 1976 I married Buddhika Ediriwickreme which was arranged by my parents. Buddhika's father was a cousin of my father's and both of them hailed from a village called Pahalagoda off Tangalle.

In 1976 during Sirima Bandaranaike's premiership, members of the opposition like Gamini Dissanayake made speeches in parliament mentioning that if and when they come to power they would abolish standardisation at the university entrance examination. After J.R. Jayewardene's resounding victory the government had to implement what they had promised earlier and standardisation was abolished. Then more Tamil students qualified to enter the two medical faculties which was not politically palatable. As a balancing act more Sinhalese students had to be admitted as well. When this was done there were insufficient slots for all of them in the two existing medical faculties. This resulted in the creation of two additional medical faculties in Jaffna and Ruhuna. When the Professor of Paediatrics post for the University of Ruhuna was advertised in 1978 I applied for it (I was the only applicant). After returning home from sabbatical leave in November 1979 I was appointed to the Chair of Paediatrics and I assumed duties on the 1st of August 1980 (I was 37 years and 7 months old on that day).

Dear colleagues this is my very own experience with palmistry!

  1. Thanks, Lama for published your experience with the Palmist. I have been a follower of Astrology for many years. The subject of Astrology& Palmistry goes back to many thousand years and it has originated in India. There are many quacks, minty my by giving false information among the well educated on the subject. I have come across friends who had their horoscopes, read by learned Astrologers to their satisfaction. I too had my children and mine read on few occasions and found the predictions to be very accurate.
I remember, late Ven. Narada relating his experience with an Indian Sage, during his itinerary in India. Monk was asked to name a flower and from there, Sage was able to predict the names of the monk's parents, destiny including the date of death. The day of death was predicted was a Sunday. Ven monk requested the devotees to remember it. I was present at the venue, when Ven. Monk concluded the story. Some people tend to pass those as anecdotal, hearsay, as some of them are prejudiced by religious bias.
So, readers, take it or leave it by saying, Astrology & palmistry are not rocket science.

  2. Very interesting Sanath. This has not changed my scepticism. If Astrology and Palmistry are true, it implies the existence of pre-detrminism (like many ancient Greek Philosophers who believed in different types of determinism), i.e., that all events, past, present and future have been already decided and planned. It is also known as Fatalism. If however, they claim to indicate possibilities or probabilities through causal mechanisms, then it is more acceptable (although to me the connection between heavenly bodies Million of miles away and my insignificant self is beyond belief) .

The difference is this. The predeterministic person will say you will get married at age 28, have 3 children, get divorced at 56 , remarry and have 2 more, and die of lung cancer aged 86. The causal deterministic will say, there is a strong indication that you will get married around the age 25 to 30, that you will get married, the marriage may run into difficulties and you will live to a ripe old age. In other words, possible future and not THE future. Apart from the intellectual difficulty, pre determinism removes incentive, can make you fatalistic and life will become purposeless- just acting out what has already been determined.

I refuse to believe that I am just an actor in a play which has already been written. My view will elicit a big storm of protests.. I hope!!

  3. Lama Thank you for sharing your encounter with a Palmist. It made very interesting reading. I have never consulted a Palmist or an Astologer myself, not because I think they are unable to predict the future , but because I am Christian , and don't want to know about what lies far ahead as I firmly believe that God holds my future in His hands , and I don't need to know the distant future .I just take one step at a time.

I don't mean to say that I don't make plans, but I don't worry too much of what lies far ahead.

Having said that, I want to share that I have heard of the Palmist you mention. One day our 3 maids asked permission to go and consult Kingsley Goonatillake, and as he had is office in Ratmalana I readily gave it.

After a couple of hours they returned home to Dehiwela and something seemed to be amusing them . When I asked what the joke was, and they giggled and said " E miniha harima boru karayek . Eya kiwwa Anula ( that is my baby's nanny ) awuruddakin pita rata yanawa kiyala .This was in 1974 before the exodus of house maids to the Middle East began. We also had no plans of going abroad at that time. But it is a fact that Anula accompanied us to the UK in September 1975 !!

  4. Hi again Lama,
Mahendra just reminded me of another incident in our lives involving this time an Astrologer

There was a fairly well known Astologer in Moratuwa who was a good friend of Mahendra for over 20 years. One day in February 1989 , Mahendra had met him quite by chance , and when told of our plans to go to USA for a holiday on the 7th of March ( the date of travel that had been confirmed by Thomas Cook) he fished out a copy of Mahendra's Horoscope which was in his possession looked at it , and said " No way , you cannot travel abroad on the 7 th. You are going on the 12th . If what I predict is not correct I will burn my books! "
Mahendra came home and told me of the incident. I was not at all concerned as I did not believe the prediction. Then 2 days later we get a communication from Thomas Cook confirming that the travel date has been changed to the 12 th due to unavoidable circumstances and apologizing for any inconvenience caused !!

    1. There you are; Suri. Astrologer when read by a person who had mastered the subject could predict the future to the date and time. I am aware that, Christian and Muslims were discouraged to believe in Palmistry and Astrology etc. After all there is a scientific basis in both afore mentioned. Astrology is based on movement of planets in ones horoscope and you should no how moon affects the sea .we have high tide and low tide as a result of gravitational movements.
You should have tested the predictions of that particular Astrology, in Moratuwa. Astrologers normally tell there clients to be honest and reply to the correct predictions. Should you lie Astrologer finds it difficult to carry on as it happened with Lama. Some people will say that it is mind reading.

    2. Sumathi, as I stated, I have two problems with Astrology. The first is not that important and is to find a way of explaining how planets can affect our life events to the point of detail such as date of marriage date of death., One could say that there is an explanation but we are yet to discover it, like gravity by Newton. I agree that just because a phenomenon cannot be explained, we cannot conclude that is not true absolutely although we can rate probabilities.

The second problem is for me by far the most difficult to accept, and that is that we are acting in a pre-determined play. Even if we bring religion into it, it does not fit with any religion. In Buddhism, karma is active and on-going and changing. There is no Buddhist compatible belief that life events go according to a plan. Tendencies or probabilities according to your actions? Yes in Buddhism. In Christianity, I see nothing to stop humans from adopting Jesus as their Saviour leading to a better life or after-life. The possibility to change your future destiny is there is ALL religions, even in Islam and Hinduism. That is my major problem with Astrology and Palmistry, the implication of pre-dterminism.

Just to complicate matters, there are some eminent Physicists who suggest that Time/space is continuous and the past, the present and the future are happening "now" and also has happened (whatever "now" means).

  5. Just to clarify my comment. I do believe that predictions can be made and these are merely that. predictions, which may turnout to be broadly correct, or incorrect. Based on family history. dietary habits and life style, as doctors we could make predictions but we could also give advice on how these tendencies could be overcome., e.g, never too late to give up smoking, control your blood pressure and take a proper diet. Predictions based on probabilities is a science. But these are things that COULD happen. not WOULD happen.

The other very common defence I come across is where instances of accurate predictions are given. What they always fail to do is to give ALL the predications made and the PROPOTION that were true.

Finally, there is the self fulfilling prophecy. The undecided man who marries a woman he meets in 2 years and decided to get married to her because "my stars indicate that" etc etc. And the man who says he was prevented from drowning because he stopped having sea baths in 1975 because his horoscope said he would die of drowning. This poses the additional problem that the horoscope man should have said that he was to drown but wouldn't drown because his horoscope indicates that he would meet a man who would give the correct advice.

Right or wrong, consulting horoscopes can make life difficult for you living with the "kahata" planted in you if you believe them and not relying on trusted and tested methods of making decisions. I know a friend of mine who lived in anxiety for 6 months till his "maraka apale" period passed. I know loving couples who were prevented from marrying because their horoscopes didn't match. It can be a soothing balm for believers though- "Lamaya gana baya wenta epa, mey handahanaanuwa, poddaka kalabala thiyan bawa penawa habai, skiura hathtta giyama, honda kalayak bihiwenawa, mata niyathenma kiyanna puluwan" says the sage to the worried parents of the child who is going through a adolescent crisis.

It is the old story, if you firmly believe that there is a helicopter in the sky ,unseen but there. which will swoop down and save you when you are in trouble, it is not necessary for such a helicopter to be there, you will travel without anxiety or worry - belief in it is enough.

  6. Sanath’s personal story is indeed a fascinating account written with great style, accuracy and honesty. Kingsley Gunatilleke was greatly respected and a well known palmist of our time. I admire Sanath's willingness to bring it to the notice of our fellow professionals who are used to evidence based information. With this background we all have some cynicism and scepticism about matters we cannot prove logically.
I will in the fullness of time write about my experiences which are not dissimilar to yours. Thank you

  7. With apologies to United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (quote below after my quote)

There are things we can explain. There are things which we cannot explain. There are things which we can explain why we cannot explain and things which we cannot explain why we cannot explain. Most of us like to be able to explain things but we cannot always explain why we like to explain. The lesson is that we will not be always able to explain why we want to explain and we just accept it as a human need.

"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don't know we don't know".

Thanks for sharing your interesting story.
I could relate a similar story but this Astrology. When I was in the SSC class my mother consulted an astrologer in Piliyandala. She was told that I will become a doctor and I will be good at "kapanna kottanna" he meant surgery.
10 years after this prediction I became a doctor and in another 12 years I became a Consultant Eye Surgeon.
In Astrology it is amazing how these predictions come true. Of course some are incorrect.
I am fascinated by astrology. I just don't understand how the planetary positions can give certain predictions with dates. It is a study but it is beyond me.
I don't know much about Palmistry. I can't understand how the lines on your palm can display your future. It is an art. I suppose one has to study Palmistry to understand. Chira

  9. Chira, thanks, you too have tasted as bit of Astrological prediction that have come true. Dr Antho too had a similar prediction about his profession(Blood in the hands)
Some say, your destiny already is engraved in your palm by the Creator, whoever it may be(Allah with 49 names, Brahma or Lord Krisna, Jehovah God etc).
Have you noticed that the lines on every palm are not similar. The three primary lines are-life line, line of destiny and line of health. There are many small line as well. I am sure there an embryological explanation how those lines come into existence. Mistakes in interpretation could arise from incorrect entries of time of birth, lack of knowledge of the reader. It would have been nice, if one could do a large scale research on the subject to establish the true nature of the practice of Astrology& Palmistry. The present day Astrology is dependant on computer predictions and very rare to find an old fashion horoscope reader.

  10. I am going to make a prediction even though I am not an astrologer! This is going to be a very animated debate! I am firmly on the side of the skeptics! I think snow storms and hurricanes can be predicted fairly accurately by studying weather patterns. Other global events such as climate change can also be predicted. But, I do not believe an individual's destiny can be predicted by reading the lines on one's palm, or studying the planetary positions! I don't even believe that God has a predestined path laid out for each of us. Our family situations, the environment, our education, our habits, our personalities, and so many other things play a role. Most of all the CHOICES we make determine the outcome! If everything were pre-destined, life would be pretty boring wouldn't it?
It was interesting to read the comments about predictions made by certain astrologers, and how correct they were! I think we tend to remember the predictions that are correct and tend to forget the wrong predictions that were made. The astrologers have not had a negative impact on any of us as far as I can tell, but when some parents believe them to the extent that they forbid marriage between two people who clearly love each other (Mahen's comment), I think they have a really irrational negative impact.

  12. Srianee, needless to say, we are on the same wavelength on this. Apart from whether astrology and palmistry are accurate or just mythical, we have to recognise that there are a lot of people who believe in it, including highly imntelligent people. The fact is that what we believe and how we form these beliefs are very personal. Beliefs are certainly not always based on logic or science. For one thing, why are there so many religions? It is also not based on intelligence.
The question to ask is whether belief in Astrology and Palmistry does more good or more harm. In my view, those who have a peripheral interest and treat it as a curious phenomenon with some amazing correct predictions and equally wrong ones (if they are truly honest) will suffer no harm. But those who take it seriously are in grave danger. They will be even subconsciously influenced resulting in harm although at times also with good outcomes, but this will be known only with hindsight. The problem for them also is that there are no unbiased reviews on how good these practitioners are, and believers are usually migrating from one expert to another based on friends recommendations or stick to a person they like--- till that person makes a glaring error.
My concern is this - will harm result? If a person has this unshakeable belief that his car is protected by hanging a talisman from the rearview mirror, that is fine, It will give him more Peace of mind (provided he does not go to excesses and does not service his car as the Talisman is enough!).
My advice to my friends is please do not make decisions based on Astrology or palmistry. Curious indulgence? OK. If you want to build a house there is an auspicious time (more a good time period based on the availability of materials, cost etc and not exactly at 4.03 am facing North)  to start-- but not based on Astrology! Sri Lanka should have the most successful Parliaments in history as almost all of them were opened at auspicious times.

If you want to get married to someone, yes, do some comparisons, but not based on Astrology. Think of areas of compatibility and possible tensions that may arise and don't go with eyes shut because "you are in love"
Do no harm to you or unto others, That is my maxim.

I put my skills to good use at parties given by Cigar Jayanetti (cousin) and his family at there luxurious house. Girls flocked to me to get their palms read and were more than satisfied as I always said flattering things. I was very happy too because in those young and innocent days, holding a girl's hand and caressing it (had to do it to clear all the lines which were faint- I don't know what you were thinking!) was enough to get the old testosterone going!

  15. Mahendra, your cousin was Sigar and not Cigar Jayanetti.
Friends, I am very pleased that this topic has generated a very lively discussion! The vast majority of our politicians are heavily dependent on astrology etc. Our present President Gotabhaya, visits an astrologer by the name of Gnanakka based in Anuradhapura,, at least once a week. I am told that decisions such as whether to lockdown the country, dissolving of parliament, handing over of nomination papers are determined by her! She had been a telephone operator at the Anuradhapura Hospital earlier. Sumathi, I wonder whether you have heard of her?
Most of our VIP politicians including Ranil, visit Hindu shrines in South India, to receive blessings, very regularly.
I have a suggestion to make regarding the accuracy of astrological predictions. Conduct a double-blind trial as follows. Select three groups of patients,1) from the OPD clinic,2)from a ward,3)from an ICU.
Obtain the date, time and place of birth of these patients and give it to a panel of astrologers and request them to predict the prognosis, including death. The analysis of the results would provide very useful information. Suri, are you in a position to undertake this task?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sanath, you are right , he was called Sigar because his proper name was Sidath but I always wrote Sigar as Cigar! Why? because Sigar had no meaning.

Your idea of a double blind trial is a good one but I doubt whether it will ever happen.

If what you say about President G is true, my fears for the future of Sri Lanka have multiplied by a factor of 100 at a very conservative estimate. Singapore was behind Sri Lanka a long time ago and Sri Lanka leapt forwards in a backward sense since then. Now we know the reason why!

    2. Lama, I have never been a blind follower of Astrological predictions. I have consulted my children's and mine only on few occasions. It is a pity to see our Politicians depend on Astrology to everything under the sun. They have gone too far in-order to satisfy the ignorant. There had been classic examples of very accurate predictions among our batch.
As far as my little knowledge in Astrology is concerned; I must say that it is based on mathematical calculations. Basic requirements are the almanacs, two published in Sinhala(Epa Panchanga litha and Shiromani Panchanga litha)Tamils have the Tamil version, published in Tamil nadu.Astrological year id different to the new yrs of Jews, Christians and Muslims. How about the story of three vice-men predicting the Birth of Jesus,(future King) by studying the stars in the. Muslims calculate their beginning of fasting and endings by the position of the Moon. Isn't Astrology/Astronomy. My uncle used to do part-time astrological chartings and writing in Ola leaves, in addition to his Ayurvedic practice. As Srianee's question about accuracy of time of birth is concerned, I would like to say that there is margin of error. The Planets do not move every second or minute.
. They may remain stationary for hours. I am not very certain how they calculated the time of birth, before the clocks were invented. During they time, people calculate the position of sun by measuring the length of the shadow from the person. Measuring the time at night, I have no idea. Old fashion Astrologers will have an answer. I too agree with Lama that one should undertake a double blind trial. about the outcome of operations performed according to auspicious hours and at random. It should be a large scale study, in order to have a statistical significance.

    4. Lama, with respect, eye surgery is not only eye tests and issuing a prescription for a pair of spectacles. As you well know, it involves very delicate surgery(cutting and digging)If one were to go into depth of the profession, few Astrologers were able to be precise about the Profession. I am sure it was too premature for Chira's mum to question the Astrologer at the time. She must have been over the moon. I am not been paid to defend the Astrologers and the Palmists. I believe both are good old sciences.

  17. Is too in that sense as Kapana Kotana applies to Butchers, Surgeons and Undertakers. One could request to explain what Kapa Kotana means. A clever Astrology can enhance the predictions. Some Astrologers were capable of predicting the exact meaning and the profession, similar to what predictions, Lama had on palm reading. I am not a blind follower, but there very accurate predictions that I have heard from my very reliable friends, who ended in their Professions as predicted. My closest friend had his horoscope read even before he thought of doing Law. Astrologer predicted that he would become a famous lawyer, and compared to the horoscope of late Mr Marapona, retired as a High Court Judge.(father of two Maraponas, who are famous lawyers. In fact he wanted to do Medicine as his father was an Apothecary.
He started his carrier as a teacher and studied for Advanced level, went into do LLB, part one(London). Then he managed to transfer to University of Ceylon as an External student. After obtaining LLB, he joined Law College and completed the Advocates. Climbed the ladder from State Counsel to Acting Solicitor General.

Thanks for your interesting article and very impressed with the accuracy of the predictions.
Has any one consulted "OLA LEAF" astrologers from India who used to visit Colombo from time to time?
In the early nineteen eighties when I went to Sri Lanka on holiday ,I heard this unusual story.
A mother took her ten year old son to one of these astrologers who predicted that the boy would develop a serious illness in his fifties and that he would be saved by honey.
From then on , honey, became an essential component in his diet. His mother was
elated . As time went by however he put on weight and developed diabetes and eventually ischaemic heart disease.
He was referred to a highly skilled Cardiothoracic surgeon in London
for bypass surgery . The surgery was a huge success. Surprise ,surprise the surgeon's name was - Mr Honey.
MR Honey was a well known cardiac surgeon in London during this period, but not sure about the rest of the story.

    PS
There was a cardiac surgeon by the name of Honey in London at that time, but I do not know how true the rest of the story is.

  20. Thanks Speedy for reminding me to read the discussion on Palmistry and time of birth, I have a few comments. Back in my school days I kept flunking Tamil in the SSC exam over and over exam ( thats when I was sent to Jaffna to study Tamil from STC). I desperation I went to a Palmist/Astrologer for his input. After reading my Palm and what else and told me and these were his very words "Forget girls boys, fruits, flowers and go and spend time with your books", here I am now a Physician
As for time of birth, yes being an Obstetrician I always wander for horoscopic reason is the time of birth the birth the arrival or but or the whole body. Also not all the clocks are in sync. Talking of time of birth I am reminded of an incident when we were in a final year few weeks before the final exam. if I remember right we were supposed to have 20 deliveries either at Castle street hospital or DMH. Many of us did participated in some deliveries and then put our names against others. One of our colleagues had his name listed for a delivery at castle and 2 minutes later at DMH. Unfortunately for him Dr. Attapatu who was Prof Rana, registrar detected this made the guy do all his 20 deliveries under his supervision.
I still don't what the connection of Astrology and Palmistry are but my 3 year old lgrandson looks at the moon and the planets and names them all and the looks at the stars, maybe someday he will explain the science behind Palmistry and Astrology as science including Medicine finds the unknown
