He was born in Kandy and was educated at Royal
College, Colombo. He was a few years senior to me but I knew him as a top-class
Hockey Player. Others in that team in 1959 included some well-known names you
will recognise.
The team comprised of:- Michael Loos (goalkeeper), Lalith Senanayake (right back), M.P.C. Jaimon (left back), Nihal
Mendis (right half), H.N. Wickramasinghe (Captain -
centre half), D.B. Gunasekara (left half), S.D. Jayaratna (right extreme), S.S.
Wickramasinghe (right inside), N.S. Koddituwakku (Vice-Captain - centre
forward), Nanda Senanayake (left inside) and K.N. Wimalaratne (left extreme).
He did his internship at Ratnapura and some here need identification.

Jaima specialised in Anaesthetics and went to New Zealand as Anaesthetic Registrar, Wellington Hospital from 1973 – 1977. After a few years in Wellington, he went to NSW, Australia where he had a distinguished career. His last post was as Visiting Medical Officer in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care, Illawarra Regional Hospital, Woollongong 1991.
He is also related to our late and much-loved batch mate Razaque Ahamat. He was Razaque's wife Farina's first cousin. In one of Razaque’s posts in our blog, he said,” He was more to me and my wife, besides being a batch mate he was a member of my community and the first cousin of my wife Farina. I had the good fortune to have visited him twice in Australia. My wife too visited him when I was in NZ”.

I seem to be the first to comment on this concise but quite detailed account of our batch mate Jaimon who I knew very little detail about, and I feel it is great at least after his death to know what a unique person he was and about all he achieved in his quite unmatched medical career. It is never too late to read about people we spent 5 or so years with in our undergraduate life. I really hope we can make this a regular feature so we can learn especially about our batch mates who are no more. Thanks Lucky and Nihal!

On another topic, I attended the funeral of Prof. Dulitha Fernando yesterday. She was a former Dean, Colombo Medical Faculty and former Professor of Community Medicine. She was a few years junior to us, but was at Peradeniya.
Nice to see the young faces of the Junior staff at Ratnapura General.According to my calculation,six from our batch had passed away.I knew Jaima very well during the Faculty days and the Internee period.
ReplyDeleteIndra might remember the missing names as i have forgotten their names.After all it was 1968 that the photo was taken?The photo was taken in front of the side entrance of the building.
Ours was a unique and brilliant batch academically by any standards. After our great dispersal in 1967 we never know how the professional and personal lives panned out for many of our friends. Several of our mates who were not academic high-flyers in the faculty have reached those dizzy heights. I had the good fortune to access the professional success of MPC Jaimon. He has indeed done brilliantly well.
ReplyDeleteI have fond memories of ‘Jaima’ as he was known in the faculty. He was an inveterate smiler and always delightful company. Jaima was a pillar of the Men’s Common Room often seen with his tea-punt enjoying an animated discussion. He was ever present at the faculty parties and events including the ‘infamous’ and tremendously enjoyable final year trip.
I saw him before he left for New Zealand celebrating the farewell with a customary drink.
It saddens me deeply Jaima is no more. I send my belated condolences to his family.

Jaima's father was a journalist attached to the now defunct "Sun" newspaper. I remember the Morris Minor car they owned. My last meting with Jaima was before we graduated. Sadly, we never met thereafter.

ReplyDeleteDr Jaimon joined the Anaesthetic Dept at Wellington Hospital the year I left and didn’t know him much. I know he was well thought of in the anaesthetic circles in Wellington and though I did know that he relocated to Australia,

ReplyDeleteI knew him well when I was HO Kegalle at the time. He was quiet, very helpful and courteous and was well loved by all who associated with him. I lost contact with him later.
