Well done Royal, you Won by an innings. I do not know why but STC during our time could not match Royal, Ananda and Visakha. (Thomians were crashing weddings and exams, just joking). Hardly anyone from our sister school Bishop's College entered Medical College. Trinity college results were similar to STC.

  4. Thanks for all the contributions. I would still love to know the various schools from where our batchmates came to the Faculty as it would indicate the vast range of schools from all parts of the Country who came to the Faculty and formed one big happy Family. The Colombo schools had an advantage those days but I doubt whether this still operates. As far as I know, we had boys from Trinity, St Peters, St Josephs, Wesley, St Benedict's, St Anthony's, Richmond, St Aloysius, Nalanda, and girls from Ladies, Visakha, Bishops, Bridgets, and many more- a truly great collection who gelled together so well. Really proud of all these schools and apologies if I missed any as I am sure I must have!

    1. Stalin Wettimuny passed direct to the Faculty at the UE exam held in Dec 1959. He entered in June 1960 and was with the "three hundred" batch along with Preman Wimalaratne, LD Jayawardene, MBS de Silva, ELT de Silva, Sarath Samarasiri and HP Gunawardhane. Wettimuny later fell back and joined the 1961 batch (our senior batch).

  7. Dear friends, the situation has changed. In all the medical faculties there are more girls than boys (the ratio is about 2/3rds to 1/3rd). At Rajarata most girls are from Ratnavali Balika Vidyalaya Gampaha and most boys are from Bandaranaike Vidyalaya Gampaha and Anuradhapura Central College. It is similar in the other medical faculties as well.At Bloemfontein Hostel, one wing is occupied by girls.Few years ago the President of the Old Royalists Doctors Association, Ajith Tennekoon who is the Chief JMO, invited me to deliver a lecture to the students sitting for the GCE O level examination, regarding a career in medicine as the numbers were dwindling, but the situation is still the same.Because of the prlonged gap period between the A level examination and entry to a medical faculty, some of the affluent studies travel abroad for medical education.

  8. Do the Medical schools meet the demands of the nation.Has the government got the resources to employ all the doctors with employment. There is very little opportunity to find employment, abroad.
