Creative Spot - A Poem by Zita Perera Subasinghe

It’s Rubbish, Really!

Little piece of dirt, little paper scrap
You lie on my table like a turned over snap

Were you blown in by the breeze?
To me it seems somewhat a mystery
Are you even hoping to seize
A little bit of ancient history?

Who do you really belong to?
And what really belongs to you?
By whose love do you long to
Be cherished and cared for too?

Are you where one made a note?
Are you part of a shopping list?
Where a loved one carefully wrote
Things to buy for a romantic tryst?

You really belonged in a tree
Those long, long years ago
A papyrus you had to be
If you needed to achieve more

A great author needed you
To write a world famous book
A million readers greeted you
From world’s every corner and nook

Are you part of a Paper-Chase?
Little kids following your trail?
Either they won with glee and grace
Or you sadly made them fail?

Hey! I know just who you are!
A tiny piece of Egyptian history
A scrap from grave of Cleopatra
At last I have, solved your mystery!

    1. Thanks, Mahendra! Remember you are a greater poet. I am still reading your collection, one by one. So I appreciate your kind words.

Brilliant poetry as usual. How very true about those slips of paper that blow in the wind. A lovers message from old or a receipt from an electronic till. As those famous lyrics go " the answer is blowing in the wind". Paper indeed has changed our world.

    1. Yes the answer is Blowing in the Wind, indeed, Nihal! Thanks for your take on it! When we think of it seriously, we only look at and read the few we choose to. There may be rich material which will continue to blow unnoticed. Zita

  3. Zita,
Really..... What a load of RUBBISH!!!!
You have the great knack of even converting rubbish into great poetry.
I wish I had that talent.
I have been endowed with the 'habit' of gardening, toiling away with my sweat & blood----- come rain -- come sunshine -- come snow.... with my dirty spade & trowel, while you in your cushy air-conditioned indoors sipping away at a 'goblet' of wine or something stronger stroking away with your gilded pen!!!
    That is injustice....
I will have a few words "HIS" ear when I next meet "HIM"!!
I suppose:-- TO EACH HIS/HER OWN.
Carry on regardless Zita, we want more.
    Kindest regards.

    1. Razaque, your toil with spade and trowel with dirty hands is much more fruitful, literally as you produce beautiful trees and flowers and fruits I am sure, as a result of your toil. And you are creative! What more than that. Man can't live by poetry alone, food is vital!

  4. I remember when I first arrived in London, all those years ago, I was dazzled by the bright lights of this great city. I firmly believed there were no poor people in England until I found a tramp delving into garbage. He found a half empty can of coke and I could see the happiness in his face. Just goes to show that one man's rubbish is another man's treasure!! Even after 5000 years of human existence on this planet we have not learnt to share our wealth equally. Political dogma, religion and economic strategies have failed to get rid of poverty. Many born to poverty die in poverty.
I know I have digressed from the topic but it is important to dwell on these issues despite our busy lives.

    1. ND, it is certainly worth thinking about. Man is described as being "innately moral" and I would love to believe that is true but I am not at all sure. All I know is that Greed is Universal, as is self preservation. Money is God but only because it is a means to satisfy endless greed; greed for material wealth, greed for power and greed for permanency where none not exists.....

I like this quote by Michael Leunig, a political cartoonist from Australia.

"The hypocrisy of some is that we like to think of ourselves as sophisticated and evolved, but we're still also driven by primal urges like greed and power"

All these ruminations and reflections might be "Rubbish" in some people's view!

    2. Nihal and Mahendra, your discussion is a lot more important. It's great that one thought leads to another and now we are talking of the futility of man's toil in the world because there's so much inequality. It is good to hear about the cartoonist, Michael Leunig. They are clever people who see more than what is obvious. Zita

    3. The difference between MAN and ANIMAL is HYPOCRACY, GREED & WEALTH.
Of course some people behave like animals which is an INSULT to that creature despite there being an element of POWER in the animal kingdom as well!!!

    4. ND,
'GOD' created man 8000 yrs. ago says the Bible!!
Pyramids were built 8000yrs. ago by man!!!
      Hindu religion is 9000yrs old!!!
Aztecs & Incas built their structures even earlier!!
Man went to Australia 35,000 yrs. ago!!
Scientists believe man evolved 250,000yrs. ago!!
But you say man was created 5000yrs. ago???
      Is it CREATION or EVOLUTION???

      WHICH IS WHICH,....I KNOW NOT!!!!.

    5. If it is more than 5000 years it emphasises my point further.

    6. It is believed civilisation is 6000 years old.

    7. Depends on which civilisation you are referring to, ND?
Aborigines in Aussie had their own inimitable way of life & culture.
Aztec, Inca & Hindu civilizations were flourishing when white man was hanging from trees!!
I wonder what the others were doing???
      Probably still in Africa!!!!.

      Kind regards, ND.

    8. "We have not learnt to share our wealth equally".....
      very important sentiments.
The only way it can be done is by SOCIALISM!!
"KEEP THE RED FLAG FLYING HERE......."
This my wish for the world.... not in my lifetime.

  5. Nihal and Razaque, I do apologise for not seeing your later comments up until now in October. You guys are great people full of wisdom, far thinking both of now and about history and I humbly thank you for taking the trouble to comment. So happy this blog that Lucky started has become a good platform for discussion. Rita/ Zita
