My first recollection of Lareef was when he captained St Thomas'college in 1960 and took 5 wickets in an innings (and 2 in the second) in the Royal Thomian Cricket match The opposing Royal Captain was Michael Dias. Lareef was one of the best leg spinners of that era and his googly was a deadly weapon. I think he is one of few cricketers who have represented more than one country having played for Ceylon first in 1964/65 and for the USA in 1979. Of course our other illustrious batchmate Cyril Ernest, an off spinner who played for St Benedict's at school, also had that honour. I may be wrong but I think Cyril captained the USA Cricket team. Quite amazingly, his physical appearance has changed very little and it was a pleasure to meet Lareef, who is rarely without a smile, at our recent reunion.

ReplyDeleteAs usual, I am the late Zita but as I always say, better late than never. This is to congratulate you on your recent achievement of being re elected as president of the SLMA of North America. I hold this achievement in even greater esteem than anything obtained in your home country of Sri Lanka. It is so important to promote activities of this sort abroad as you now are an ambassador for our country. I am delighted to be enlightened about your achievements in the cricketing field both in SL and in the US. Well done!
